What does Decarbonising mean?

Decarbonisation is the process of reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) such as Carbon dioxide (CO2), Methane (CH4), Nitrous oxide (N2O), Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and fluorinated gases emissions from the lifecycle.

Decarbonising is also a part of organisation where we shape the human activities, operational process, lower down the usage of fossil fuels and consume enviro-friendly products to reduce the emissions and better impact of the climate.

It is a global effort to take a bigger step in adopting sustainability to lower down the carbon emissions and achieve a Net Zero climate goal.

The Decarbonisation Process/ How can we make changes?

Decarbonisation is a major step towards the environmental system. That involves human behaviour, company and government policy, team efforts and involvement and many more.

Adopting Renewable Energy Sources

  • Redesigning an organisation structure where you can adopt solar, wind, hydroelectric or geothermal sources.
  • Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as solar, hydro, wind, tidal, geothermal, biomass and hydroelectric power plants.
  • Electrifying heating & colling system.
  • Electric vehicles.

Lifecycle

  • Adopting a simple process where we can stop, re-think, recycle or re-use.
  • Utilise the maximum product lifecycle.
  • Improve efficiency by implementing different methods of tracking, adopting a new technology and implementing them to lower down the operations process.
  • Understand the concept of ESG to Minimal impact on the climate.

Sustainable Solution or Data tracking

  • Track scope 1, scope 2 and scope 3 emissions data by breaking down them into different sources, levels, supply chain and value chain.
  • Implement sustainable methods to decrease the carbon emissions, water, waste management
  • Use the low-carbon logistics, reusable and sustainable raw materials

Policy, Regulation

  • Mandatory reporting standard.
  • Frameworks, GHG protocol, Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), and AASB S2.

Lifecycle Shifts

  • Encourage corporate team to adopt recycle products and low carbon practices.
  • Redesign waste management process in an organisation.
  • Encourage innovation towards sustainability and rewards.

Impact of Decarbonising on ESG

Environmental (E)

  • Carbon footprint
  • Understand Ecosystem
  • Sustainable operations

Social (S)

  • Slower down greenhouse effect/ healthy lifestyle
  • Build Community trust
  • Education & awareness

Governance (G)

  • Align with the global standards & frameworks
  • Investor expectations
  • Climate risk management

Importance of Decarbonising

  • Climate change mitigation
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Present transparent ESG report to investors
  • Innovation/ competition/ Opportunity
  • Long-term solution
